V.1 Sitting in the back of my Cadillac, eyeing up the road ahead. The lunatic at the wheel, he's got nerves of steel, He's in and out of my head. V.2 The needle is creeping up on ninety miles an hour, when the limit is just forty five. Pedal to the metal, I'm a little unsettled. I wish he didn't get to drive. CHORUS Now the serotonin blues will be tomorrow's news, tumbling down like rain. As the dark night falls and the big black walls come closing in around my brain. And with nothing to lose ‘cept a sea of booze and the pills that just might ease my pain. It’s too close to call, if I make it at all, Back into the light, back into the light ag-ain. V.3 Watching from the back of my Cadillac, think I heard the tyres scream. We're out of control and the Highway Patrol Is crashing right into my dream V.4 A blue light is flashing behind my eyes, the siren is beginning to wail. Will the lunatic pull over if I tap on his shoulder? We're gonna crash right into the rail. CHORUS Now the serotonin blues will be tomorrow's news, tumbling down like rain. As the dark night falls and the big black walls come closing in around my brain. And with nothing to lose except a sea of booze and the pills that just might ease my pain. It’s too close to call, if I make it at all, Back into the light, back into the light ag-ain. MIDDLE EIGHT Wish it didn't have to be this way, The Witches Hat just swings and sways The roller-coaster climbs and falls And falls and falls and falls and falls... V.5 Sitting in the front of my Cadillac, heading down to buy me champagne. No panic at the wheel and I'm starting to feel That I'm back at the races again. V.6 The mercury’s rising to ninety degrees, and It's only just ten thirty five The motor is purring and my heart is stirring, Feeling good to be alive. CHORUS Now the serotonin blues are yesterday's news, tumbling down like rain. As the dark night falls no more big black walls closing in around my brain. And with nothing to lose I can skip the booze and the pills will ease my pain another close call, But I've made landfall, And I'm back in the light, back in the light again.

Not Crazy 04:39
Verse 1 You should know that I’m not crazy ‘bout you any more, I don’t need to hold you close all through the night, Spending time trying to find some way to be with you, I don’t need to ask if everything’s all right. No more sleepless nights and endless phone calls, baby, Don’t need adrenaline to get me through the day, You know, my heart no longer pounds at just the smell of you, I don’t worry if you’re gone for just one day. Chorus Cos we’re way down the road and left those days behind, You know, we went all the way and far beyond Loving you was only (just) the start of it You’re part of me, I’m part of you Verse 2 I know injustice in the world makes you so angry Makes you shout at politicians on TV You know I’m right there on your shoulder shouting louder Cos whatever angers you will anger me We cry together at the same old movies And it’s true that I can make you laugh out loud We know each other inside out but it’s much more than that You’re the beating heart that I can’t live without Chorus Cos we’re way down the road, in such a better place You know we went all the way and far beyond Loving you was only just the start of it You’re part of me, I’m part of you

V.1 What kind of fool
Makes war instead of love?
What kind of fool
Brings down rain from up above? What kind of fool
Fools with jealousy and hate? What kind of fool
Serves only envy on his plate? V.2 What kind of fool
Has a heart as cold as ice?
What kind of fool
Plays love with loaded dice? What kind of fool
Throws friendship on the flames? What kind of fool
Plays such stupid games? CHORUS You can send them flowers,
You can call upon your powers
To say I’m sorry.
You can send them caviar,
You can promise them the stars
Cos you’re a clown. You can tell them all, From London to Nepal You’re gonna change. But if you don’t know who you are, It’ll be a step too far
And bring you down. V.3 What kind of fool
Stays a fool for all his days?
What kind of fool is he
that never mend his ways? What kind of fool
Is the fool you want to be?
You can change your ways my friend And set that damn fool free. CHORUS You can send them flowers,
You can call upon your powers
To say I’m sorry.
You can send them caviar,
You can promise them the stars
Cos you’re a clown. You can tell them all, From London to Nepal You’re gonna change. But if you don’t know who you are, It’ll be a step too far
And bring you down. MIDDLE EIGHT Down, down, it'll bring you down. There's a lonely heart on the other side of town. I know you said you thought love was dead and your heart was shackled to the ground. Down, down, it'll bring you down. There's a lonely heart on the other side of town. Down, down, it'll bring you down. but turn around let yourself be found. CHORUS You can send them flowers,
You can call upon your powers
To say I’m sorry.
You can send them caviar,
You can promise them the stars
Cos you’re a clown. You can tell them all, From London to Nepal You’re gonna change. But if you don’t know who you are, It’ll be a step too far
And bring you down.

Making It Up 03:30
Vs1 Long days, light nights, that was way back then, Good times, like minds, do you remember when? It was fun to run through city streets, acting like we were mad, Getting high on just adrenalin, we really weren’t that bad. Chorus Making it up, making it up, making it up as we went along, Breaking it up, breaking it up, breaking it up when it all went wrong. Making it up, making it up, making it up again cos we are strong, Yes we are strong. Vs2 This way, that way, closure never found. No one could say which way we were bound. No one told us how to live our lives, in the here and now. But love and friendship still survive, we must have found out how. Chorus Making it up, making it up, making it up as we went along, Breaking it up, breaking it up, breaking it up when it all went wrong. Making it up, making it up, making it up again cos we are strong, Yes we are strong. INSTRUMENTAL MIDDLE EIGHT Chorus Making it up, making it up, making it up as we went along, Breaking it up, breaking it up, breaking it up when it all went wrong. Making it up, making it up, making it up again cos we are strong.

V.1 Many times I’ve said goodbye, Locked the door and turned the key, Thrown a bag upon my shoulder with a sigh, And heard you whisper next to me. CHORUS All the roads, every flight, Although it’s far away we find ourselves tonight, A candle burns where we belong, We’ll turn around and be back home before too long. V.2 Many sights along the way Shanghai streets we walked so tall Climbed the rocky path to look on Taransay Quebec city in the fall CHORUS All the roads, every flight, Although it’s far away we find ourselves tonight, A candle burns where we belong, We’ll turn around and be back home before too long. MIDDLE EIGHT Come the closing of the day Turn the corner in the lane It was all a dream you turn to me and say Like a shadow on the rain. Never pack my bags again All my wanderlust is lost or locked away Only memories remain CHORUS All the roads, every flight, Although it’s far away we find ourselves tonight, A candle burns where we belong, We’ll turn around and be back home before too long.

I don’t know what to say The clouds have blown away You’ve coloured in the rain MIDDLE 8 I didn’t know right at the time My life was running aground Lying alone at night Waiting for you waiting in line Don’t know what let me down I know you put it right Vs 3 Day before the day I met you, The music always played out blue Feeling grey and I don’t know why In grey town avenue. Came the day right out of the blue Along came a song, it was you Turning my eyes up to the sky The sun was shining through CHORUS Now I’m with you tonight your eyes shining bright we’re drinking champagne. I don’t know what to say The clouds have blown away You’ve coloured in the rain

Offline Baby 04:10
Vs1 You’re the kind of girl who loves to leave me, baby, And every time you leave we’re through You’re the kind of girl who keeps returning, honey, Cos coming back is what you do. Vs2 But every time you leave it hurts less, baby, And making up’s less fun to do. So I’m thinking that it’s kind of time now, maybe To take my leave before you do. CHORUS I’m going offline, baby, so cover up your eyes, I’m going offline, baby, no more tears and lies, Closing down my connections and cutting all my ties Going offline, baby. Baby bye, bye. Vs3 I’ve been getting used to reading your signs, baby, I can see the signs of leaving in you. You’ve made it clear, babe, this is not forever, So I am getting out before you do. MIDDLE EIGHT There are times for staying, baby, But I can’t wait that long. There are times for praying, baby, But I’m for moving on. Ooooh, ooooh, This is one time, baby, that you can’t prove me wrong. Vs4 We’re the kind of folk who should never be together, Togetherness is not for you. You’re the kind of girl who’s wanting your cake, baby, And I know you want to eat it too. CHORUS I’m going offline, baby, so cover up your eyes, I’m going offline, baby, no more tears and lies, Closing down my connections and cutting all my ties Going offline, baby. Baby bye, bye I’m going offline, baby, so cover up your eyes, I’m going offline, baby, no more tears and lies, Closing down my connections and cutting all my ties Going offline, baby. Baby bye, bye

Vs1 I used to think I was invincible Till I found out that I was just like everyone The road I’ve travelled has been sensible And now I realise the things I should have done Everything was going right Now everything’s going wrong I just woke up and realised my time has go-o-one Crying out loud, yes I am crying out loud, And I’m so tired of just being someone in the crowd Crying out loud, yes I am crying out loud, The time that’s left I need to stand up and be proud. CHORUS I am alive. I am alive. Vs2 I believed that I was indispensable Till they came round and told me I was not required At my age they said I was just expendable Too old, too slow, too easy to be fired Everything was going right Now everything’s going wrong They just rang up one day and told me to be go-o-one Crying out loud, yes I am crying out loud, Made to feel I’m someone no one wants around Crying out loud, yes I am crying out loud, Trying just to hide and not be found. CHORUS I am alive. I am alive. MIDDLE EIGHT The lifetime that I gave them The lifetime that they took The honesty and loyalty Not worth a second look The years that they took from me I’ll never have again Thrown upon their scrap heap And left without a friend… alone until the end CHORUS I am alive I am alive Vs3 I was told that hard work was reciprocal We’d always be rewarded for our time Now I know that that was just political Could never compensate us for our lives Everything was going wrong Now everything’s going right I lost my job but now I see the li-i-ight Crying out loud, no I’m not crying out loud I’m taking back the time that’s left to me Crying out loud, no I’m not crying out loud After all these years at last I’m free CHORUS I am alive I am alive

about

SONGS FOR LIFE

This album was recorded by myself and a disparate bunch of musician friends gathered together under the umbrella of convenience known as The Peter May Band. We assembled at my studio in south-west France, as well as collaborating online, over three long Covid years, to produce “Songs for Life”. These are songs written mostly by me, with lyricist Dennis McCoy, and in collaboration with Stephen Penn, Ian Feber and Steven Jay. The album itself is dedicated to the memory of Stephen Penn, my lifelong friend, who tragically passed away in 2022 before the collection was complete. One of the songs, “When I’m Drinking”, was written by Stephen. His original version was fast and up-tempo. I slowed it right down to give it the gravitas I think it deserved.

“Songs for Life” was mixed and mastered by Steven Jay at Merlyn’s Cave Studio
